Keolis Commuter Services’ strategic management objectives are aligned to a sustainability principles-based approach, to ensure we build a strong long-term legacy for a critical asset and the future of public transit in the Greater Boston area. Our support of environmental issues goes beyond trying to get passengers out of their cars. As a provider of worldwide transport solutions and an operator of thousands of vehicles, Keolis is proactive in promoting solutions which limit our impact on the environment.
Each and all of our employees make a positive contribution to a more sustainable company. We are happy to share some of our achievements and external recognitions of sustainability excellence.
The Keolis Commuter Services Environmental Management System (EMS) is the guiding framework for implementing and advancing our Environmental Policy. Modeled on ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems, the EMS supports environmental compliance by establishing environmental best management practices procedures and training programs for our employees. Our ISO 14001 EMS achieved third-party certification through AFNOR in November of 2015. Our EMS has been implemented throughout facilities in Massachusetts and Rhode Island that support the railroad operations and maintenance activities for the Commuter Rail. The EMS sustains our commitment to continual improvement and recertifications are achieved every three years.
Through the Sustainability Commitment, APTA recognizes its member organizations for continued achievements in sustainability. Public transportation agencies and businesses voluntarily choose to join the Commitment and pledge to implement processes and actions that create continuous improvements in environmental, social, and financial sustainability. Based on specific measurable achievements, organizations are given Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Level recognition. Keolis Commuter Services signed the APTA Sustainability Commitment in 2017 and received Gold Level recognition in 2019. In our commitment to Sustainability, we build an annual roadmap that includes strategic initiatives around Corporate Social Responsibility.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a globally recognized benchmark certification for quality design and consideration of resource efficiency, material toxicity, human health, and construction impacts related to buildings. The certification standard is organized around six categories where the project team can target credits specific to design and/or construction issues: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation. Our Boston, MA headquarter office is LEED Certified since 2015.
