BOSTON, MA – September 23, 2015 – Keolis Commuter Services, which operates the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) commuter rail system, celebrated Pollution Prevention Month by honoring Keolis crews at the West Cambridge Maintenance Facility for several major initiatives aimed at reducing commuter rail’s impact on the environment.
The effort was inspired by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Pollution Prevention Week, which this month highlight the benefits of pollution prevention. “Keolis is focused on safety, service and our passengers,” said Keolis General Manager Gerald C. Francis. “Our Environmental Policy and efforts like those by the team in West Cambridge reduces our operational impact on the environment, our employees and the communities we serve.”
Actions taken by the West Cambridge Maintenance Facility staff focused on reducing source pollution, replacing on-site fuel storage system to be less impactful and safer, and exchanging a solvent used to clean mechanical parts to a non-hazardous, environmentally friendly solvent.
As a result, staff at the West Cambridge Maintenance Facility were awarded the first annual Keolis Environmental Stewards of the Year Award at a recent ceremony.
